Hoyas hope to find a win in 2010

By Bud L. Ellis

It starts at Davidson on Sept. 4. It concludes at home with Marist on Nov. 20.

In between, the Georgetown Hoyas hope to do something they did not do all of 2009: win a football game.

The Hoyas finished 0-11 last season, placing last in the Patriot League with a 0-6 mark. And the schedule for 2010, especially early in the season, isn’t going to be easy. ( Read More…)

Hot-shooting Ohio knocks Hoyas out in opening round of NCAAs

By Bud L. Ellis

With every shot that fell, with every point going up on the scoreboard under Ohio’s name, the Georgetown Hoyas got the sinking feeling that this wasn’t their night.

It wasn’t, and as a result, their stellar season is over far sooner than expected.

Ohio came out bombing and never stopped, sinking 13 3-pointers in taking control and bouncing the Hoyas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, 97-83 in Providence, R.I.

Chris Wright led Georgetown with 28 points. Greg Monroe scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, and Hollis Thompson added 16 points, but it was far from enough.

Ohio shot 13-for-23 on 3-pointers and finished the game shooting 58.2 percent. The Hoyas, despite shooting 50.8 percent, couldn’t maintain the pace.

Down 12 at halftime, the Hoyas had one minor surge that cut the lead to seven before the Bobcats pulled away.

Down at half, Hoyas rebound to snap losing streak

By Bud L. Ellis

Austin Freeman scored just five points in the first half. Georgetown found itself down six to Louisville, staring at a third-consecutive loss.

But the 11th-ranked Hoyas found their stride in the second half Tuesday night, led by their leading scorer. Freeman hit five 3-pointers in the second half, scoring 24 of his 29 points after halftime as the Hoyas pushed past the Cardinals 70-60.

Georgetown came into this one on a two-game losing streak, having lost to Syracuse and Rutgers. But the Hoyas rallied, holding Louisville to just one field goal during a 15-minute stretch of the second half while Freeman and the Georgetown offense kicked things into high gear.

The win moves Georgetown (19-7, 9-6) into a tie for fifth in the Big East with Louisville. Greg Monroe pulled down 14 rebounds for the Hoyas.

Georgetown plays host to Notre Dame on Saturday. Next week, the Hoyas play at West Virginia on Monday and against Cincinnati at home next Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

No. 7 Hoyas Stunned by USF, 72-64

For years, a game against the University of South Florida for Big East opponents was typically penciled in as close to an automatic win as you can get in the rugged Big East.

This year, those once-pushover Bulls have been shocking some opponents. And on Wednesday, the Hoyas were the latest to fall victim, as USF’s Dominique Jones took over in the second half to lead USF to a 72-64 upset of the seventh-ranked Hoyas.

In the first half, it was the Greg Monroe show for Georgetown, as he went to work early in the low post to score 14 points. USF had no answer for Monroe inside, and the Hoyas were more than happy to exploit it.

The Hoyas were also playing tough D on Jones, who had come into the game averaging 37 points in his past three games. Jones didn’t score until knocking down a put-back attempt, more than 12 minutes into the game. At halftime, the Hoyas were leading 35-26, and looked en route to comfortably cruise to a victory and prepare for a huge home matchup Saturday against No.2 Villanova.

But in the second half, Monroe picked up back-to-back fouls within the first minute of the half, which really limited him offensively and defensively. As the Hoyas went soft, the Bulls got tough, and Jones started driving straight into the heart of the Hoya defense, which sorely missed Monroe’s aggressiveness and shot blocking.

At one point, the Bulls had outscored the Hoyas 30-13 in the second half… and while the Hoyas narrowed USF’s lead to two points with less than four minutes left, Monroe picked up his fifth foul a minute later, and the Hoyas couldn’t bring it any closer.

“I don’t know exactly what happened,” Monroe said. “We definitely wasn’t looking backward and we definitely wasn’t looking forward. As a team, we have to be more focused to win games like this.”

With Obama in house, Hoyas surge pass Duke

By Bud L. Ellis

The President was in the house. The crowd was decked out in grey T-shirts. No. 7 Duke provided the opposition.

It was a moment for the Georgetown Hoyas, and they seized it with both hands.

Putting on its best shooing performance in 30 years, the Hoyas ran roughshod over Duke, hitting 71.7 percent of its shots in an 89-77 victory.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were on-hand at the Verizon Center for John Thompson III’s 200th career victory. The Hoyas set the tone early, an 18-3 run in the first half putting this one away.

Chris Wright sparked the Hoyas with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Greg Monroe also scored 21, and Austin Freeman scored 20.

Georgetown finished 33-for-46 from the field, its best shooting game since 1980.

Duke would come within seven in the second half before the Hoyas pulled away yet again.

The Hoyas return to Big East play Wednesday against South Florida.

Hoyas seek rebound, and may have President in the house Saturday

By Bud L. Ellis

As it looks to bounce back from a painful loss to Syracuse in a showdown of Big East powers, the Georgetown Hoyas might get a boost from the biggest basketball fan in the Beltway.

President Barack Obama is expected to attend the Hoyas’ showdown with nationally ranked Duke on Saturday at the Verizon Center, according to published reports. The President is a big basketball fan who likes to hoop it up when he can slip away from his presidential duties.

Regardless whether Obama is in the house or not, the Hoyas need a bounce back performance against the Blue Devils. Monday, Georgetown hit four 3-pointers in the first 3:24 at Syracuse, streaking to a 14-0 lead. But then things stopped working for the Hoyas, Syracuse rallying and then pulling away from a 73-56 loss.

True, Saturday’s game isn’t a Big East contest. The Hoyas sit 2 ½ games out of the rugged conference standings in fifth place, behind the third, fourth, 17th and ninth ranked teams in the nation.

After facing Duke, the Hoyas return to conference action with games Wednesday at home against South Florida and next Saturday against conference leader Villanova.

Hoyas tip tough week with showdown at Syracuse

By Bud L. Ellis

Needless to say, one glance at the Georgetown Hoyas’ basketball schedule shows this week is going to be mighty tough.

And it starts Monday night with a nationally televised showdown between two Big East powers.

The Hoyas travel to Syracuse Monday for a matchup with the fifth-ranked Orange, who sit one game behind first-place Villanova in the Big East and has won six in a row.

Georgetown is third in conference play, ½ game behind Syracuse. The Hoyas have won four of their last five, the only loss a five-point defeat at Villanova on Jan. 17.

Saturday, Georgetown steps out of conference play to take on sixth-ranked Duke at home.

Georgetown throttled last-place Rutgers on Saturday, showing no signs of a letdown after upending 11th-ranked Pitt on the road Wednesday. The Hoyas will need that same focus this week to navigate the tough road awaiting them.

Hoyas work to avoid letdown after big win at Pitt

By Bud L. Ellis

If there is one thing the Georgetown Hoyas don’t want to do, it’s follow up Wednesday’s smashing performance with a dud.

That’s what the Hoyas will be on guard for when the bottom feeder of the Big East, Rutgers, comes to town Saturday.

Fresh off a stirring road victory at No. 11 Pittsburgh, the 14th-ranked Hoyas are just 1 ½ games behind first-place Villanova in the Big East standings. By comparison, Rutgers is 0-6 in league play, has lost seven in a row and is 0-4 on the road.

On paper, it’s a mismatch in every sense of the word. But as they say, games aren’t played on paper.

After Rutgers, the Hoyas have a big week on tap next week. Monday, Georgetown travels to No. 5 Syracuse. Saturday, Georgetown plays host to No. 6 Duke. With two games against ranked teams next week, it will be hard for the Hoyas to focus on the Scarlet Knights this Saturday.

But a slip-up here could derail all the momentum the Hoyas have built.
